Artist Bio

Jeff Meldrum is a builder, creator, musician and occasional wilderness dweller whose work seeks to better understand our place in the world, through the observation of non-human animals. Meldrum’s work often uses humour and satire to diminish the self-congratulatory preeminence of the human species, its innumerable grand experiments and the mythologies it constructs. He works through an intermedia lens, engaging with photography, sculpture and performance. Living and working in Treaty 4 and 6 Territory in Saskatchewan has instilled in him a strong connection to the land, which has prompted inquiries into animal-human relationships, wild animal cognition and the masculinity present in wilderness and hunting culture.

Art For Animals is an ongoing project that introduces sculpture to the wilderness of Northern Saskatchewan. The sculptures are typically made in response to the flora and fauna encountered during sojourns to the boreal forest. Motion-activated trail cameras, generally used by hunters, are used to document wild animals interacting with the sculptural work.
