Opening Reception and Panel Discussion: Friday, September 10
Representations of nature are always more than an imitation; they are invested with human meanings and agency. Like political representation, they express an individuals capacity to influence a system; they argue a point.
In Neutral Grounds upcoming exhibit natural Forms, five contemporary Canadian artists have produced works that investigate our relationship with nature through representation. The artists in natural Forms do not merely imitate nature, nor do they attempt solely to influence how we reconstruct nature through their representations; instead they critically investigate how our ever changing societal ideals alter nature and our relationship with the natural world. Through aesthetics and ethics, lawn care and environmentalism, oil drilling and tree planting, or painting and writing, western culture has continually attempted to manufacture an authentic natural.
natural Forms will include two new installations by Crystal Mowry and Barbara Meneley as well as four other recent works from Jeremy Drummond, Jocelyn Philibert, and Robert Hengeveld.
Central themes of the exhibition will be explored during a panel discussion with Barbara Meneley, Crystal Mowry and Robert Hengeveld, moderated by JG Hampton.
JG Hampton is the Canada Council for the Arts Aboriginal Curator in Residence with Neutral Ground Contemporary Art Forum in Regina, Saskatchewan. natural Forms is on view at Neutral Ground from September 10 through October 30
