NGCRG -Summer Reading Series
The NGCRG is an ongoing, open-access, community reading group that explores challenging texts in a supportive environment.
We will host 3 meetings over the summer of 2020
*Saturday July 4, 2 - 4pm
*Saturday July 25, 2 - 4pm
*Saturday August 15, 2 - 4pm
As one way of engaging more deeply with topics of anti-black and anti-Indigenous racism, so prevalent around the world and across Turtle Island, Neutral Ground is committing our Summer Reading Group to themes of post-colonial studies, black feminism, and critical race theory. Through this reading series, the NGCRG aims to resist both apathy and simple, symbolic gestures, by strengthening our collective knowledge around systems of systematic racism, in the art world and beyond.
Anyone and everyone is welcome to participate in the NGCRG. There is absolutely no expectation that participants come to all of the meetings however, a commitment to participate to the full extent of your capacity, is helpful in fostering continuity and in-depth dialogue.
We will begin the series with a discussion around the first chapter of Aruna DeSouza'a "Whitewalling" Available as a PDF below (shared with permission from the author)
The next readings will be determined at the end of the first meeting. Anyone participating in the group is encouraged to contribute suggestions for texts to be explored, specifically pertaining to race in relation to contemporary art, in Canada.
Through these meetings, NGCRG aims to construct and develop a more extensive community compiled reading list, through our shared work and research.
