The corner of your eye presents the viewers with a series of dioramas of scenes which are patently false in order to evoke an awareness of how perception occurs. Based on her exhibition 'All is not as it seems', shown at Montreal's Circa gallery, this project goes further by moving beyond the gallery space, by placing objects in the neighborhood surrounding the gallery, effectively dissolving the finite boundaries of the gallery. The project acts as a crossroad for two audiences: those who start at the gallery and move outwards to find the artworks placed outside, and those who come across the off-site elements by chance.
By placing the same objects both inside and outside, the gallery, usually white and hermetic, becomes porous and permeable. Two ways of experiencing the work are created: from the inside outwards, purposefully seeking out objects; finding objects by chance outside, to possibly follow them back to the gallery.
Montreal artist, Lalie Douglas, creates objects, installations and performances which question our expectations of how art should behave and questions the rules at play both inside the gallery and outside in public spaces. She has exhibited both locally and internationally. Her recent projects include Stories of the Sky Sold Underground at Art Souterrain (Montreal, 2011), All is not as it seems, (Montreal, 2010), Take Your Fears Away (Calgary and Montreal, 2009). Her work has been supported by several grants including a research and creation grant from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec and she holds an MFA from Concordia University.
